Against the world’s best slopestyle pros, in front of 20,000 action-starved fans, California-based Greg Watts lays down a dream run and wins the slopestyle crown-jewel, the Monster Energy Slopestyle at Whistler’s Crankworx.

“At first glance the course looked mediocre because some of the stunts looked a little sketchy,” said Watts. “But once people started riding everything seemed to flow together pretty good and it was shaping up to be a good slopestyle comp.”And flow together is just what Watts did – on his second run he rolled out of the gate and into a 360 tail-whip, followed by a Superman seatgrab, a backflip onto the Giro trailer with a 360 exit, a tail-whip off the Kona wall and straight into a Truck Driver (360 bar spin) from the SRAM bridge, into another bar spin off the Race Face jump, a flip-whip on the VW dirt jump and a finally a backflip from the giant Kokanee booter and into the finish line. A truly impressive line-up of tricks but what put Greg clearly ahead was that he stomped everything like Obama on the mic – not even a slight un-balanced landing. The format for this year’s event was the best score of two runs and a final Superfinal run on the impressive Boneyard course. After the dust settled, Watts scored 96 and a walked with a $15,000 cheque, just ahead of Whistler’s Brandon Semenuk and Sweden’s Martin Soderstrom.

“My run in the finals was basically my dream run. I had previously landed all the tricks I did, but linking them up back to back like that in front of all of those people at the biggest comp of the year was a dream come true,” recounts Watts, “it was the last comp of the year so I just decided to go for broke and it couldn’t have gone any better for me. I definitely accomplished one of my major life.

And to celebrate Greg’s win for a limited time only, spend $100 at the Sombrio store and we’ll through in a FREE Crankworx T-Shirt! Sorry Canadian orders only…

Sombrio Girl Claire Buchar still managed to take Nationals with a flat!
Heres how Claire describes her unreal win!

Since like 2003 it seemed like every year at the Canadian National Champs something would go wrong- a flat, a double flat, a front flat to separated shoulder, a broken thumb etc. Well I finally managed to pull it off….but just barely!

The Nationals were held at le Massif du Sud in Quebec, which by the way is pretty much in the middle of absolute nowhere, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the track amazing. It was fast, technical, rooty and fun. It even had a couple fun jumps on it and it all flowed real nice.

The weather was on and off rain, typical for Quebec, so there was mud, mud and more mud. It was soooo good though, the track really held up and stayed fast so it was okay.

I was riding well right from the start. I was just loving it and was riding it like it was dry. My M6 Evo was just carving it up!

I qualified 21 seconds ahead of 2nd place and that proves I was riding fast because it’s not like we don’t have fast girls in Canada.

I was hoping for a win the next day but to my dismay only 1/3rd of the way down the track I hear the dreaded sound of the flat tire pssssssssssssssss! Yup, I had a rear flat. I couldn’t believe it! But I just absolutely DID NOT give up. I kept pinning it almost as fast as if I didn’t have a flat except for a few jumps I had to miss because I didn’t have the speed I needed and all the pedally bits were real hard and the last sprint to the finish was very slow. I came across the line thinking I had lost. I couldn’t believe it when they said I had won by just 2 seconds! Woohoo! Lesson learned, never give up!

So there you have it. Finally the Canadian National Champ. Stoked.

Thanks for all of your support and wish me luck at the next 2 World Cups here in Quebec.

Claire.

Sombrio rider Eric Lawrenuk took first place at last weekends Goatstyle up in Creston B.C.
Smith Optics has the goods….

This past weekend in Creston BC, the annual Goat Style Bike Festival went down, and it was Smith Optics’ up and comer Eric Lawrenuk who took the win. The competition was tough as these athletes were battling for a wildcard entry to mountain biking’s biggest event, Kokanee Crankworx held in Whistler next month. Riders came from all over the world and the course the Goat Style crew assembled did not disappoint. Featuring 3 different sections, the top of the course had a ladder bridge, scoops, and drops leading into hips, berms, and a quarter pipe. The middle section had 3 different drops, and the bottom of the course had two large dirt jumps so the riders could send it to glory for their final hit.

Eric Lawrenuk with a 360-Tire-Grab at the Goatstyle Night Jam

By the time the finals rolled around, the riders had the course dialed, and the ariel assault began. Front flips, double tail whips, and all kinds of 360 variations were being stomped by the athletes, but when it was all said and done, Smith rider Eric Lawrenuk dominated the contest. Eric started his run by sending a smooth 360 off a drop into a berm, then busted out a downside tail whip off a wooden bridge hip, and then a huge 360 off the large drop that amazed the bewildered crowd. With the final section looming, Eric sped into the first jump and sent a fully dialed in 360 tire grab, and then a clean Decade to finish! The crowd went nuts, the judges liked what they saw, and Eric came away with the victory, $3000 in cash, and perhaps more importantly, a wild card entry into Crankworx, where Eric will be able to test his skills against the world’s best.
